Selecting nappies in need of stripwashing

Protocol

To identify the best candidate for laboratory analysis nappies will be smelt dry, wet with water and then wet with urine, nappies will be ranked and then the nappies then the nappies most INOSW will be sent  to Shirley Technologies for analysis.

Equipment

Nappies in need of strip wash- sent by NSG members

Control nappy without issue.

Seleable plasctic bags

Measuring cup

Urine- collected from tester.

Blind fold.

Method.

1.Place a nappy into a sealable bag, seal shut and leave for 1 hr.

2. Open, smell and place nappies in order from least smelly to most smelly while blind folded.

3. Give the nappy a score 1 for least smell and describe smell of nappy.

4. Measure 50ml of water and add to center of nappy, place back in bag and seal for a further hour.

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3

6. Measure 50ml of urine and add to center of nappy, place back in bag and seal for one hour.

7. Repeat steps 2 and 3

8. Combine scores, nappies with the highest scores will be sent to Shirley Technologies

The results

Nappies were sent in by 4 contributors, I used my one of own nappies for a control. On the day of testing each nappy was placed into a plastic sealable gag.

I blindfolded myself to open up the bags and have a sniff, the nappies were then placed in an order from nappy with the least smell to strongest smell. I removed the blindfold to see the order and have another sniff to try and describe the smell.

Round 1- Dry

Nappies C and H had no detectable smell, nappy G had a slight smell, sort of a stale smell. Nappies F, E, A and B all smelt quite strongly of a stale/fusty type of smell possibly with a bit of a detergent smell. Nappy D smelt similar to nappies F, E, A and B, but with an undertone of urine.

Round 2- Wet with 50mL water

Nappies G and H remained without detectable smell, nappy C had a slight smell of detergent. The remaining nappies had the same smell as round 1. Nappy G repelled the water when it was applied, nappy H which was the same type did not do this.

Round 3- wet with 50mL urine

The addition of wee did not make much difference to the smell of the nappies. Nappy H remained without a smell, nappy G had a faint wee smell. All the others were similar to water only. As there was not much difference, the nappies were resealed and left overnight.

When urine was applied to nappy G it also beaded on the surface, as shown in the picture above.

Round 4- Urine overnight

Nappy H did not have a smell. Nappy C had a slight smell of detergent. Nappy G smelled of wee. Nappies E and F smelt as before, but with a slight ammonia smell. Nappy B smelt as before. Nappy A smelt of ammonia and nappy D had a barnyard smell.

Dry Water Urine Urine O/N Total
A 6 7 8 7 28
B 7 4 5 6 22
C 1 3 3 2 9
D 8 6 4 8 26
E 3 8 6 4 21
F 4 5 7 5 21
G 1 1 2 3 7
H 2 2 1 1 6

Conclusion

There are some worthy candidates, all were rather smelly, and seemed to be stronger smelling when wet, in general urine did not alter the smell of the nappy much. However, nappy A, D and G became notably stronger smelling. Nappy G was also interesting in that it behaved differently to the other TJ nappy, although nappy G was sent as a control nappy it had a stronger smell when wet with urine overnight and when liquid was poured on it was initially repelled and stayed on the surface. Nappies A, D, F and G were sent to Shirley Technologies, A and D two nappies of the same type, from different households, nappy F similar smell issues to A and D, but a different type and nappy G as it was repelling water
